  • MacOS 11 (Big Sur) Now Supported

Cambium Assessment has completed the review of macOS 11 and determined a new secure browser is required to support this new operating system as well as any device featuring the new Apple silicon processors.

    Secure Browser

To allow support of macOS 11, Mac Secure Browser 12.6 is now available. To access secure testing sites, Mac Secure Browser 12.6 must be installed on devices running macOS 11. Devices running macOS 10.11 to 10.15 will continue to use the current Mac Secure Browser 12.5.

    Secure Profile

Mac devices running Secure Browser 12.6 on macOS 11 require the Secure Profile to be installed. An updated version of the Secure Profile compatible with all supported versions of OS X/macOS is now available. In addition to the Secure Profile, macOS 11 users will need to disable third-party app updates, fast user switching, and sleep mode.

    Apple Silicon Devices

Starting with certain models introduced in late 2020, Apple began the transition from Intel processors to Apple silicon in Mac computers. When running Mac Secure Browser 12.6 on Apple silicon devices, Rosetta 2 must be installed. For more information about Rosetta 2, see https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT211861.

    • Rosetta 2 may already be installed on Apple silicon devices if other Intel-based apps on the device require it.
    • If Rosetta 2 has not already been installed, the Secure Browser will prompt the user to install Rosetta 2 the first time they launch the Secure Browser. Rosetta 2 can be installed on multiple devices at once through scripting or mobile device management (MDM).

Please visit the Secure Browsers page for the new secure browser and secure profile. Please visit the Technology Coordinator page for updated documentation.

  • Spring 2021 AASCD & OELPA Test Windows Extended

The unique circumstances of this year create some logistical challenges for test administration. The Ohio Department of Education is committed to working through these issues to support the needs of schools to the extent possible. Districts first and foremost should be concerned about the safety of students and staff. Assessments should occur only if they can be done safely.

The Spring 2021 test windows for the Alternate Assessment for Students with the Most Significant Cognitive Disabilities (AASCD) and the Ohio English Language Proficiency Assessment (OELPA) have been extended to provide more flexibility for testing.

    • The AASCD testing window originally scheduled to end March 19 will now run February 2-March 26, 2021.
    • The OELPA testing window originally scheduled to end March 26 will now run February 1-April 23, 2021.

The Department will also be extending the test window for the Spring 2021 Ohio’s State Tests administration in English language arts, mathematics, science and social studies assessments. The Department will provide communication once the extension dates have been confirmed.

  • MacOS v11 (Big Sur) Support Reminder

As a reminder, new versions of macOS are blocked from accessing testing sites while Cambium Assessment confirms the new version functions properly for testing. Typically, it can take up to 90 days after release of a new version to verify support. Mac devices should not be updated to v11 until support is confirmed.

In addition, Apple introduced three new devices to their hardware lineup that feature new ARM/Apple Silicon processors. These new devices and any others based on these new processors are not yet supported by the current secure browser.

It is anticipated that support for both macOS v11 and the new ARM/Apple Silicon based devices will require a new secure browser.

Watch for future communication on support updates for both macOS v11 and the new ARM/Apple Silicon based devices. If you have additional questions, contact the Ohio Help Desk at OHHelpdesk@cambiumassessment.com or 877-231-7809.

  • OELPS Must Be Administered In-Person, No Remote Administration.

The Ohio English Language Proficiency Screener (OELPS) is part of Ohio’s standardized English learner identification. The OELPS is administered one-to-one (test administrator and student) and may not be administered remotely at this time. Districts and schools may administer the OELPS in-person to assess potential English learners if it can be done safely.

When schools are not able to safely administer the OELPS to potential English learners, they remain obligated to identify and serve students who would benefit from English language support and accommodations to access educational programs. To facilitate the timely identification of these students, the U.S. Department of Education has suggested the use of provisional English learner identification. For details on provisional English learner identification, please refer to the Office of Integrated Student Supports’ information for school administrators serving English learners and linguistically diverse families.
